Some chemicals extracted from marijuana have strong therapeutic potential. Cannabidiol (CBD), a key ingredient in the bud, has been shown to have antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. The U.S. FDA has approved drugs containing active ingredients found in marijuana but synthesized in the laboratory.

Among the most prominent advocates of medical marijuana is the Marijuana Policy Project (MPP), a small company based in the United States. The American College of Physicians (ACP), for instance, urged a re-evaluation of marijuana’s List I classification in a follow-up paper in 2008. The ACP also stated solid backing for investigating the curative purpose of the epidemic and exemption from federal prosecution, civil liability, or expert witness punishment for physicians who prescribe or dispense medical marijuana under state law.

Medical marijuana is legally accepted in several advanced countries. Some countries, including the Netherlands, Spain, Canada, Austria, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Finland, and Israel, have approved the healing use of marijuana under strict medicine restrictions. Some states in the USA are also permitting exceptions.
